| The village of Portaria where "Arhontiko Athanasaki"
is located is one of the most popular and beautiful villages from
all of those around the Pelion Peninsula. The village is just 13km
from the port city of Volos at the foot of Mount Pelion. However,
at an altitude of 650m this stunning mountainous village gives the
impression of being far, far away from the busy city below. |

Portaria is the perfect location for your holidays
in Pelion. With close access to the city of Volos, the many beaches
scattered around the coast and the famous ski centre of Agriolekes,
Portaria makes it easy to see and experience all that Pelion can
offer.
During the winter months here in Pelion, Portaria is a very popular
destination with visitors who have come here for the ski centre.
The ski centre on Mount Pelion is just a short distance away at
12km.
For the summer months, Pelion is also popular with visitors looking
to experience more of Pelion than just it's fantastic sandy beaches
and crystal sea waters.
The main square of Portaria has a fine selection of cafe bars and
tavernas where you can enjoy a tasty meal or drink, and relax in
the natural surroundings of the green plants and trees, as well
as the sound of the spring water flowing through the main spring
in the centre of the square.
As well as the beautiful traditional mansions that you can find
all over Portaria, there are also several nice churches and chapels
which are well worth a visit, to see the stunning frescoes and
icons that are housed inside.
The small chapel of "Panayias tis Portereas" is especially
important as it was where the village got it's name from.

Portaria also has many stone paths around the village which will
take walkers on travels through the ever-growing nature of Portaria.
Along the walks, you will be able to marvel at the amazing nature
which grows in this area of Greece, as well as stopping at many
of the fresh waters springs, which can be found all over Mount
Pelion.
Another place of interest in Portaria are the ruins of the hotel
"Theoxenia", which can be found just off the main village
square. This hotel was considered to be one of the most luxurious
hotels in all of the Balkans. Sadly it was destroyed during the
German occupancy of Greece in the second World War. However, it
is a great symbol to Portaria, and shows just how important and
magical this village of Pelion was. One can almost imagine how
the hotel looked in its prime, on it's perfect location when you
take a walk around it's ruins.
Visitors to Portaria are also welcomed to take part in several
of the cultural festivals that take place here every year. The
most popular are the "International Dance Festivals"
which take place during the months of July and August. A revival
of a traditional Pelion wedding also takes place at the end of
August. Portaria is the ideal village to be based for your holidays
in Pelion. It offers it's guests the chance to sample the magic
and natural beauty that we have been blessed with.
No visit to Pelion is complete without visiting Portaria, but
to actually stay here during your Pelion holiday will make your
time here that much more magical and memorable. Welcome to Portaria,
our home ....
